Water

Project Intro

Ingerop South Africa (ISA) was appointed by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) for the raising of Hazelmere Dam, in the KwaZulu Natal Province of South Africa. This is the first project of its kind to be awarded to ISA by DWA An investigation was carried out to improve the dam wall stability, the conventional system of using mass concrete to bulk up the existing wall was compared to the implementation of ground anchors through the dam wall into the founding rock. In carrying out the comparison, both time and cost relationships were compared and evaluated, where it was found that the use of mass concrete would be in the order of triple the price of the ground anchors. In order for the ground anchor system to be viable, anchors of up to 91 x 15.7mm strands (25,389 kN Maximum Breaking Load) were required, meaning that the installation of the highest capacity ground anchors in dam walls in the world would need to be implemented.
